It’s been a very busy day full of breaking news and changing schedules for Long Beach State.
First, the Big West Conference Board of Directors voted to restart competition for sports other than men’s and women’s basketball. However, the Beach also had positive COVID-19 tests come back that have now put both basketball programs on an immediate pause.
“Today has been bittersweet,” LBSU athletic director Andy Fee said. “Early news of approval by the Big West CEO’s for Spring sports to return was a shot in the arm, and news of both our basketball programs pausing for COVID protocols was disappointing. We will continue to work with local public health officials for their approval on our plans to begin spring sport activities as well as monitoring our basketball programs health and well-being.”
The men’s home games against CSUN originally scheduled for today and tomorrow have been cancelled. The same is true for the women’s basketball games at UC Irvine. This is the second pause for the men’s team, and both programs need to compile negative tests before being allowed to resume their seasons.
“What we know in the world of COVID is that each is fluid and challenging,” Fee said. “We will persevere and look forward to returning at the appropriate time.”
LBSU women’s basketball is off to it’s best start in 15 years going 6-0 in Big West play, and the men’s team is 2-2 after splitting it’s first two conference series.
