In the nick of time, the California Department of Public Health modified its guidelines to allow high school water polo to happen this year. The sport has a deep history in Long Beach and this season will be unlike any other, with games happening almost every day during an accelerated two-week season that will still see every team play at least six games.
“It’s going to be hectic and fun,” said Moore League secretary Lisa Ulmer. Because water polo has to happen in an outdoor pool to meet the CDPH guidelines, Cabrillo has the only high school pool in the city that qualifies. That means practices and games will be happening from before dawn until late into the night–but every high school coach we spoke with said they can’t wait, and expressed gratitude at being able to have a season at all.
