The Long Beach State men’s and women’s basketball teams are in Las Vegas this week for the Big West Conference Tournament.
LBSU is the No. 3 seed in the women’s bracket and will face Cal Poly in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Beach (12-8, 11-7) snapped a seven-game losing streak in the regular season finale on Saturday at UC Irvine 80-62. Senior Naomi Hunt has come alive after a shooting slump, and scored 21 points in both games. She was 8-for-9 from the field and 4-for-4 from 3-point distance.
Hunt’s teammates Justina King and Ma’qhi Berry were both named to the All-Defense team, the second time for King, and the senior guard also got a spot on the first team. Guard Patricia Chung made the All-Freshman team.
The LBSU men’s team had a rough finish to its season against UC Irvine at Walter Pyramid. The Beach lost its sixth straight game by three points or less on Friday in overtime, and then after Michael Carter III was dismissed from the team due to a postgame altercation with the referees, they extended their losing streak 73-58.
As the No. 9 seed in Las Vegas, the lowest seeding in more than a decade, LBSU takes on CSUN today at 3 p.m.
