BREAKING: Wilson Football Coach Mark Ziegenhagen Resigns

Wilson football coach Mark Ziegenhagen is stepping down after six seasons at the helm that turned the program around. The Bruins reached the CIF-SS semifinals in 2016, and the quarterfinals in 2019.

“It is with mixed emotions that I am resigning,” Ziegenhagen wrote in an official statement released by the school Monday. “The memories we have created over the years are some of the most cherished I will ever have.”

Ziegenhagen has been coaching for 15 years and served as defensive coordinator with the Bruins before taking the head coaching job in 2015. He leaves with 44-19 record, and the 44 wins ranks fourth all-time at Wilson. His seven wins per season average is the best the Bruins have ever seen.

“Coach Ziegenhagen created a winning culture right from the start,” Wilson athletic director Jeff Evans said. “He showed every year that he was there for the athletes, and wanted to make sure their experience was special.”

Ziegenhagen knew the win over Lakewood last week would be his last game, but wanted to make sure he didn’t steal any of the spotlight from his players— especially the seniors. While Wilson searches for a new head coach, Ziegenhagen said he will continue to serve in the role as walk-on coach.

The job will still be a walk-on coaching position with a season stipend of $5,500.19. There are no teaching positions available at this time, according to Evans. Any person who is interested needs to email a resume and two letters of recommendation to Evans at JAEvans@LBSchools.net. Applications will be accepted until Monday, May 3rd.
