The last time the Millikan girls tennis team faced Long Beach Poly, they tied 9-9 but ultimately lost the match when the games won tiebreaker had the Jackrabbits with a four-game edge.
The Rams didn’t let the decision come down to who won more games as Millikan defeated Poly 11-7 Wednesday afternoon at Millikan.
It was a rare win for Millikan over Poly and only the second time in Millikan coach Torie Frapwell’s 15-year tenure as the head coach of the girls team.
“This does a lot for confidence,” Frapwell said. “Poly’s always a name. You got to meet the name sometimes and this will give us confidence going in against Wilson.”
After the first round of matches, Millikan led 4-2 after winning two singles and doubles matches.
In the second round of matches, Maya Alvarez and Kailee Mazzeo both won their matches as Millikan led 7-5 after the second round.
In the final round, Alvarez got a little payback as she defeated Julia Sudetjo 6-3 to clinch the victory for the Rams.
“I lost to her last time,” Alvarez said. “So I was really just trying to stay positive and keep my mindset up and just follow through and play hard until the end. I think I did actually pretty well and I’m proud of myself.”
Along with Alvarez sweeping her opponents, Mazzeo also swept her three matches.
For Poly, Tara Rahai and Melyn Lim swept their matches.
