The Millikan boys basketball team led wire-to-wire as they defeated Cabrillo 65-52 Friday afternoon.
Eric Bonales led the Rams with a game-high 21 points as Millikan was able to get some payback from the teams’ first meeting of the season.
“We pushed the ball and we passed a lot more today,” Bonales said. “We were able to get rebounds and our defense was solid and we limited their shots.Last time, we didn’t close out or play defense as well.”
After leading 30-25 after the first half, the Rams went on a 14-6 lead to open the game up and take a 44-31 lead.
“We’re still learning about each player,” Millikan coach Curtis Boyer said. “And they’re still getting back from being rusty after this last year. So, each week we’re seeing progress even against the tough teams so I’m proud of them.”
Cabrillo used a run of their own to get back into the game in the fourth quarter thanks to back-to-back threes from Seti LamSam Jr. Another three from Jared Lloyd cut Millikan’s lead back to 52-45.
Jaguars coach Kyles Hawkins was proud of his team’s effort without senior Ronald Watts who is out with an injury.
“When you lose somebody it hurts, but you got to move on and play basketball,” Hawkins said.
Cabrillo is back in action on Monday against Poly while Millikan takes on Compton.
