HIGH SCHOOL

Kalaya Buggs, Long Beach Poly Basketball

Kalaya Buggs had a performance that was the stuff of legends last week, setting a school record for 3-pointers in a game with seven triples in a 25-point, 12-rebound performance in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship, leading Poly to a win.

Dean Ormonde, Millikan Baseball

Rams senior Dean Ormonde picked a good time for his first career high school homerun, going yard in the top of the first of Millikan’s quarterfinal game. He scored three runs but the first ended up being the difference in a 9-0 victory.

Jade McDonald, Long Beach Poly Track & Field

Iowa-bound Poly senior Jade McDonald had a long to-do list at last week’s CIF-SS Division 1 Finals, competing in four individual events. She won the triple jump and the 100 hurdles, and had third-place finishes in the long jump and 300 hurdles.

PJ Jefferson, Wilson Track & Field

Iowa-bound Wilson senior PJ Jefferson put in work for the Bruins at the CIF-SS Finals, winning the 300 hurdles and the 400 (just the second-ever athlete to do so in one Finals meet) as well as running legs on Wilson’s winning 4×400 relay and second-place 4×100 relay.

Aujane Luckey, Wilson Track & Field

Bruins sophomore Aujane Luckey had a special day on Saturday as well. Luckey ran legs on Wilson’s winning 4×100 and 4×400 teams and also won the 400, planting her flag as a bright young talent in the prep world.

Asjah Atkinson, St. Anthony Track & Field

Cal-bound St. Anthony senior Asjah Atkinson was the star of the CIF-SS Division 4 Finals, winning both hurdles races as well as the long jump, and helping to lead the Saints 4×100 relay to a third-place finish.

Cherish Washington, Lakewood Track & Field

CSUN-bound Lakewood senior Cherish Washington had a great day at the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals. Washington won the shot put, with teammate Samaria Usher finishing second; Washington also took second place in the discus.

Xavier Heard, Jordan Track & Field

Lane-bound Jordan senior Xavier Heard continued his historic season last Saturday, breaking his own school record in the discus by more than 10 feet en route to a fourth place finish, along with a second-place finish in the shot put.
