The Lakewood girls’ volleyball team won the Dave Mohs Tournament championship over the weekend, with a sweep win over Cathedral Catholic, a power from San Diego. The Lancers won 25-22, 25-18 in the final.
“The whole group was so involved all weekend,” said Lakewood coach Mike Wadley. “The Millikan match was closer than we wanted it to be and I was concerned after that, but we were ready. Our block was working.”
The Lancers only dropped one set in six matches, defeating Dana Hills, Edison, Palos Verdes, Menlo, San Clemente, and Cathedral. Fresh off a narrow five-set loss to Mater Dei, and with the emphatic win over PV–ranked No. 7 in Division 1–the Lancers look more and more like a lock for the top playoff division. They’re currently ranked No. 6, and that was before winning the prestigious Dave Mohs Tourney.
“Are we an open team, a team that will compete?” asked Wadley. “I don’t know if we’re with the top two teams but I feel like if not, we’re right behind them. These girls are hungry for competition.”
Shayna Martinez was named Tournament MVP while Keke Hall was named All-Tournament. Martinez had 37 kills and 21 digs, while Hall had 29 kills and 13 blocks over the weekend. Fatimah Hall had 120 assists and seven aces, while Oregon State signee Laura Williams had 26 kills, 13 blocks, and 30 digs. Samarah Dacoud had 41 kills and 27 digs.
Lakewood will face Wilson tomorrow afternoon as Moore League play continues.
