After weeks of frustration the Wilson Bruins picked up their first win of the season by beating Cabrillo 54-0 at home on Friday night. The victory was also the first for coach Scott Meyer.
“I’m happy for these guys to finally come out and have some fun on a Friday night,” Meyer said of his players. “Just having the feeling of winning a game… sometimes for a young team you have to learn how to win and figure out how to handle that success.”
Wilson (1-4, 1-1) scored eight touchdowns on just 23 offensive plays because of good field position and a running clock in the second half. Bruins running backs Johnell Gray and Christian Chapman both scored a pair of touchdowns. Chapman’s second score from eight yards out came after he hurdled a Cabrillo defender.
“I saw him and I just had to jump over him, man. I had to do it,” Chapman said. “This feels good (to win). Our offensive line was out there blocking.”
Chapman gained 48 yards on four carries.
“He’s getting better and better every week,” Meyer said of his sophomore running back. “I think he’s going to be special by the time he’s a senior.”
Cabrillo (1-5, 0-2) got some positive plays from running back Kenjin Mababa and quarterback Luis Haro, but the Wilson defense was in control with 12 tackles for loss.
The Bruins got the night started quickly with a nice kickoff return by Dajon Harold, and Gray scored from two yards out three plays later. A blocked punt by Jordan Williams set up another quick touchdown from Chapman.
Wilson quarterback Xander McLaurin hit Harold early for a 16-yard touchdown early in the second quarter, and then after the Jaguars were forced to punt, he and Shane Heiman hooked up for a 45-yard score on a screen pass. McLaurin four of his seven pass attempts for 95 yards and those two scores.
Chapman capped the scoring in the first half with his hurdle touchdown, and Wilson led 34-0 at halftime.
Wilson visits Poly next week while Cabrillo enjoys the bye week.
