Wilson girls’ golf coach Paul Henry said junior Alyson Sor and senior Emi Sverduk are “inseparable”.
They eat lunch together at school, drive with each other, and of course are best friends.
It was only fitting that the two dueled it out during a five-hole playoff on the final day of the Moore League Finals at Skylinks Golf Course on Wednesday.
During the first four holes of the playoff, they went back and forth.
If one had a good drive, the other did as well.
If one was short on a putt, the same for the other.
After they both parred the first four holes, they headed to the par-3 120-yard fifth hole.
“I am starving,” one said.
“I’m hungry too,” muttered the other.
In the end, Sor got the better of her best friend as she sank an uphill putt for a birdie to claim the 2021 Moore League Girls’ Golf Individual Championship.
Sor, who won the league title as a freshman as well, had a little leg kick as the putt rolled in,
“I don’t know why I do that,” Sor said with a smile after the tournament.
Sverduk entered the final day (nine holes at El Dorado on Monday and nine at Big Rec on Tuesday) with a four-shot lead, but Sor shot a 5-under on the day to force the playoff.
Still Sverduk, who was looking to become the third three-time champ in league history, could have won with a par on the final hole but bogeyed it.
Both players had separated themselves going into the final round and finished 28 shots ahead fo the field going into the additional playoff. Each player posted a 36-hole total of 143 in the tournament, good for 1-under par.
“I was stress-free today,” Sor said. “I started looking at the scoreboard (on the back-9) and I was hoping she was going to make that putt (on 18).”
Henry said he doesn’t have to do that much coaching with his stars except “hand them snacks”.
While it was a disappointing end for Sverduk, she still has a chance to defend her CIF State Southern Regional Championship if she advances that far.
Sor and Sverduk, along with Sammy Shaw (third, Wilson), Madison Williams (fourth, Poly), Kate Montemayor (fifth, Poly), Shelby Hess (sixth, Wilson), and Chloe Pearl (seventh, Wilson) will compete in the CIF Individual tournament at Western Hills Golf Course in Chino Hills next Wednesday.
