Girls’ Tennis: Wilson Holds Off Millikan to Complete Unbeaten League Season

Wilson girls’ tennis earned another outright Moore League championship last week with a grinding win, 10-8, over Millikan.

The Bruins were led by star performances from freshman Vanessa Holden and sophomore Vivian Hall, both having dominant victories, with Holden not dropping a match.

The victory marked the Bruins second consecutive Moore League championship and continued an undefeated win streak in league play over the past two seasons. Wilson has now claimed back-to-back girls’ tennis titles for the first time since winning five straight from 2009-14.

“It was a tough match,” Wilson head coach Nick Medina said. “Millikan played excellent. It came down to three tiebreakers in the third round, and when that happens, it can go either way.”

Holden and Hall both won convincingly, 6-1 and 6-0, to start round one while Millikan pairs Maya Cummings/Nina Collier and Adora Vinhee/Ava Medure earned victories to keep the match tied 3-3 to end the first round.

The underclassmen were once again big in the second round as Holden and Hall both had strong performances, winning their matches 6-0 and 6-2.

Wilson was up 7-5 entering the third round and would need a strong finish to close out the visiting Rams.

Despite losses early in the match, Wilson doubles pairs Andrea Trolesi/Irit Paiement and Brooke Burke/Konstantina Papadamis would refocus and pick up crucial wins, 7-6. Paired with another victory from Holden, the three wins put Wilson up 10-8, sealing the victory and outright title for the Bruins.

“It’s finding confidence again,” Trolesi said. “And not letting the losses get to you.”

With CIF playoffs soon approaching, the Bruins will be faced with new challenges.

“It’s going to be tough,” Medina said. “We got moved up a division from Division 3 to Division 2, so we’re not really sure what to expect but I don’t think we need to change anything that we’re doing, we just need to improve on what we’re doing.”

Both Wilson and Millikan are participating in the Moore League Tennis Tournament this week, with the singles and doubles finals set for Friday afternoon at Billie Jean King Tennis Center near the Wilson campus.
