Compton High’s football team is back in the playoffs after winning the Moore League’s dramatic envelope draw tiebreaker on Friday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
“We just saw it on your Twitter and it was pandemonium on the bus,” said Compton football coach Calvin Bryant. “It was crazy. It’s great to get this opportunity. Any way you can get in is great, it’s unfortunate that someone from our league doesn’t get in but it feels great for us. Our guys can exhale a little bit.”
After Friday night’s results, there was a three-way tie between Compton, Jordan, and Lakewood, all of whom have beaten each other this year. By Moore League rule, those three teams had their named placed into envelopes. Moore League secretary Lisa Ulmer then had administrators from each school gather to draw names. The school in the first envelope drawn is eliminated, and the winner of the head-to-head game between the remaining schools gets the playoff spot.
Jordan principal Keisha Irving drew the envelope, and to her dismay it was Jordan’s envelope. That left Compton and Lakewood, with Compton having won their game against the Lancers last week.
Jordan, as a .500 team, still has a strong chance to make it in as an at-large–CIF-SS playoff brackets will be released Sunday at 10 a.m.
