Cabrillo boys’ water polo found themselves on the wrong end of a close game against Westminster in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 quarterfinals. It was the second time in three seasons the Jags made it to the quarters.
Although Cabrillo led 5-3 at the half, Westminster used scoring runs at the start of the third and fourth quarter to prevail and defeat the Jaguars 9-8.
Gabe Castaneda had a game-high three goals as he left everything he had in the pool.
Coach Lawrence Durand was proud of the way his team responded to adversity all season long.
“We had the most adversity I’ve ever experienced as a coach,” he said. “These guys are resilient. We have the best home record in Moore League. We made history with two shutouts…I tell the guys it’s not always going to be apple pie. You have adversity and you just have to keep on trucking.”
