Boys’ Basketball: Lakewood Holds Off Wilson For Win

Lakewood boys’ basketball came out victorious against Wilson on Wednesday night 62-51 when they didn’t play their best brand of basketball according to coach Duane Cooper.

“Tonight we won and we didn’t play our best,” he said. “For me, that’s always a plus but we have a lot of stuff we have to work on. Defensively we are not where I want us to be.”

Lakewood was paced by Mason Pacheco who ended with a game-high 22 points. Wilson was led by Jake Deleray who finished with a team-high 19 points.

Wilson came out with the hot hand and right mindset as the Bruins were hitting shots from beyond the arc and making the right plays to find their open guys. Taking advantage of Lakewood’s defense mishaps, the Bruins were able to take a 15-11 first quarter lead.

However, the second quarter was when the Lancers began coming up with stops and forcing Wilson to turn the ball over. Lakewood came up with steals and were able to get out and run in transition. The Lancers only allowed the Bruins to score six points in the quarter, and Lakewood took a 31-21 lead going into the half.

The second half saw more of the same defensive intensity from Lakewood. Wilson made strides at closing the double-digit deficit but never was able to bring back within single digits. The Lancers would eventually go on to win this matchup to improve to 2-0 in Moore League play.
