For the second time this season, Long Beach State men’s basketball got great individual efforts in a loss at No. 5 UCLA on Thursday. Freshman and St. Anthony High alum Jadon Jones had a game-high 27 points but the Beach lost 96-78 in Pauley Pavilion.
LBSU played at UCLA on Nov. 15, and this game was added to the schedule this week after more Big West games were canceled.
Jones surpassed his previous career high of 20 points, which he set in the Big West Conference tournament last year. He also became the third LBSU player to score over 25 points at UCLA this season. Jordan Roberts chipped in eight points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes, but he was limited with foul trouble.
LBSU (4-8) held a four-point lead ten minutes into the game, but UCLA (9-1) responded with an 11-0 run. The Bruins led 45-29 at halftime.
Jones scored 15 of his 27 points in the second half.
LBSU is scheduled to start the Big West by hosting Hawai’i at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Walter Pyramid. The Beach has already had its conference opener canceled three times.
