Long Beach is sending six boys’ soccer teams to the CIF Southern Section playoffs this week, and all of the Moore League teams will be on the road against league champions. The first round is Friday. Most games will be at 3 p.m. or 5 p.m.
Division 1
Despite winning the Moore League championship for the second time in four years while only giving up a league record three goals, Wilson (12-4-5) is being sent on the road to face Warren. The Bears (11-4-3) won a share of the San Gabriel Valley League title. This is the only Division 1 matchup between league champions.
“This is very unusual but I’m not complaining,” Wilson coach CJ Brewer said. “These types of decisions are based on rankings and our ranking dropped when we lost four nonleague games due to being shorthanded… Right now we have the talent level to compete with anyone.”
Long Beach Poly (9-3-6) finished second in the Moore League and will travel to face Big VIII League champion Santiago. The Sharks (11-2-5) are on a 10-game winning streak.
Millikan (11-6-6) was third-place in league and will also visit a league champion in Huntington Beach. The Oilers (14-2-5) didn’t lose a Wave League game and haven’t lost a game since before Christmas.
Division 2
Cabrillo (14-6-2) is the fourth place finisher out of the Moore League and will face Almont League champion Montebello (12-3-6) after the Oilers played a lot of close games this season.
Lakewood (8-8-2) got into the postseason as an at-large team and will visit Santa Ana. The Saints (14-3-4) didn’t lose a Orange Coast League game while winning the title.
Division 7
There’s a great local matchup in this bracket between St. Anthony and Avalon. The Saints (10-6-2) were second place in the Camino Real League and the Lancers (6-4-1) were third in the San Joaquin League. This game will be at 11:00am on Saturday at St. Pius-St. Matthias High School in Downey.
