The 2021-22 season continues for Long Beach State women’s basketball as the Beach earned an at-large bid into this year’s WNIT. After coming up short in a quarterfinal loss to UC Davis in the Big West Tournament, the team’s 19-8 overall record earned the program its fifth WNIT appearance and first since 2016.
Long Beach State will travel to face Oregon State this Thursday at 7 p.m. PT in Corvallis. Fittingly, that’s where the Beach made its last postseason appearance, in a heartbreaking 56-55 loss to the Beavers in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. In fact, when the Beach and the Beavers meet this Thursday, it will be on the 5-year anniversary of that previous meeting.
Historically, the Beach holds a 2-4 record in the WNIT with its last victory coming back in the year 2000. The last time LBSU appeared in the tournament was also in the Beaver State, suffering an 84-76 loss at Oregon back in 2016. This year’s WNIT bid also marks the first postseason appearance for Long Beach State head coach Jeff Cammon, who recently signed a five-year contract extension to remain head coach through 2027.
Oregon State is 14-13 on the season and finished eighth in the Pac-12 this season. Should the Beach advance, they would play the winner of Colorado State and Portland in the second round.
