Sometimes it’s just about taking what the opponent gives you.

That’s what the Long Beach State Dirtbags did on Wednesday by drawing a program record 13 walks in their 7-1 win over No. 23 UConn on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

UConn (12-3) entered the game ranked fifth in the NCAA in fewest walks issued per nine innings.

The Dirtbags (8-7) scored twice in the first inning and the Huskies didn’t score until the top of the ninth.

Dirtbags right fielder Chase Luttrell and third baseman Tyler Porter both had two hits while center fielder Rocco Peppi and first baseman Jonathon Long both drove in two runs. Shortstop Sebastian Murillo drew two walks and scored twice. Tanner Carlson walked three times.

On the mound, Dirtbags redshirt freshman Zach Voelker pitched six scoreless innings while striking out seven and walking one. Marques Johnson (1.2 IP, H, K) Kaden Moeller (0.2 IP, H, BB, R) and Dalton Ponce (0.2 IP, K) pitched well with the lead out of the bullpen.

BOX SCORE

Long Beach State has now won three consecutive games and six of its last seven. The Dirtbags host Hawaii in the Big West Conference opening series this weekend.
