The St. Anthony softball team made history on Thursday at Pan Am Park by winning its first ever Del Rey League championship. The Saints (11-9, 7-0) clinched a share of the title on Tuesday, and took it outright by beating Saint Joseph 10-0 on Thursday.
“We battled injuries last year and early this year but it brought out the best in us as a team,” St. Anthony coach Joseph Younger said. “Every girl has embraced their role and is ready to step up when it’s their turn.”
The Saints racked up 19 hits Thursday while Sammie Dodge led the team with four hits, two RBI and a run scored. Miracle Mckenzie had three hits. St. Anthony is hitting .451 as a team this season.
In the circle, Rose Cano (3 IP, H, 9 K) Jayla Cadena (2.1 IP, H, 4 K) and Jane Quinn (1.2 IP, 3 K) combined for the shutout.
It was also Senior Day as part of the last home game of the regular season, but the Saints are looking to make a deep playoff run.
“Our seniors have created a winning culture and this team treats each other with love and respect,” Younger said. “We have unfinished business (in postseason) and they are ready for the challenge.”
The CIF Southern Section playoffs start May 5.
