There were impressive performances, as well as some painfully near misses on Saturday as Long Beach’s track and field stars looked to qualify for next weekend’s CIF-SS finals. After the dust settled, more than 50 Long Beach athletes made it through prelims, giving them a chance to compete for a CIF title at Moorpark High School next Saturday.
In Division 1, Long Beach produced the top qualifier in nine different events, including all four relays. Long Beach Poly was the top qualifier in both 4x100m relays while Wilson controlled both 4x400m races.
Wilson also had the top qualifier in the boys’ 1600 as senior Nico Colchico produced the fastest time of the day, and hurdler Isaac Lewis had the best time in the boys’ 300 hurdles.
Poly’s Aniyah Wyche was the top qualifier in the girls’ 100m and Jaelen Knox had the best time in the boys’ 200. Millikan’s Jason Parra won a fast heat in the boys’ 3200 to post the best mark of the day.
In Division 2, Jordan had a nice day led by super sophomore Jordan Washington. He had the best time in both sprints, comfortably cruising to wins in the boys’ 100m and 200m. Teammate Daryll Stevens had the fastest time in the boys’ 300 hurdles and Javon Brown had the best mark in the boys’ high jump for the Panthers.
There were also some athletes who just missed out on qualifying for finals. Poly’s Lauren Reed was 10th in the girls’ 100, just one spot shy of qualification. Missing the mark by just .03 seconds behind teammate Taylor Johnson and .04 seconds behind Roosevelt’s Krystal Harrell in eighth. Reed will still compete in both the long jump and triple jump for the Jackrabbits.
The most heartbreaking miss of the day was for Wilson’s Samarra Monrroy, who finished outside the top nine in the girls’ 200 by just one one-thousandth of a second. Her time of 25.114 was just behind Vista Murrieta’s Kaila Robinson, who ran a 25.113. Monrroy did qualify in the 400 along with two of her Bruins teammates.
On the boys’ side, Poly’s Javon Hampton was 10th in the 100 by just .01 seconds, and Jordan’s Javon Brown placed 10th in the long jump.
All divisions will come together next Saturday, May 14 for the CIF-SS finals at Moorpark HS. The field events begin at 11 a.m. with the races starting at Noon.
