There aren’t many high school rivalries like the softball games between Millikan and Lakewood at Lisa Fernandez Field. The Rams and Lancers play under the lights at Mayfair Park twice a year, and this season gave us two of the best games of the year.
In March, the rivals traded the lead in the final innings before Lakewood’s Cat Calzada delivered a walk-off hit. In April, Millikan’s defense and stellar pitching from Ava Schaffel helped the Rams win and clinch a share of the league title.
“This is the first time I’ve been involved in a rivalry this deep,” Millikan first-year coach Michelle Lehr said. “I came from Kennedy where our rivals were Cypress. The tension, energy and fans wasn’t anything like this. It’s intense.”
