The third and final day of the 2022 MLB Draft saw two more Long Beach State Dirtbags get their name called. RHP Marques Johnson and OF Chase Luttrell were both chosen on Tuesday, giving the Dirtbags four selections in this year’s draft.

Johnson was the first Dirtbag off the board on Day 3, going to the Boston Red Sox in Round 11. The junior righthander posted a 3.25 ERA across 44.1 innings in 2022, racking up an impressive 51 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to just a .190 average. His six shutout innings at UC Irvine helped earn him Big West Pitcher of the Week honors.

He’s the third player from Long Beach State to be drafted by the Red Sox in the past five years, joining Jarren Duran (2018) and Dylan Spacke (2019).

Luttrell went off the board in Round 13 as the Miami Marlins scooped up the junior outfielder. The 2021 First Team All-Big West selection started 54 games in 2022 and had a highly productive year, slashing .312/.365/.520 with a team-high nine home runs and 46 RBIs. Luttrell smacked 18 homers in his Dirtbags career, placing him 10th on the all-time list. He produced a pair of six-RBI games as a junior, and had a combined 25-game hitting streak spanning the end of 2021 and the start of 2022.

They join Luis Ramirez and Devereaux Harrison, who were both selected during Day 2 of this year’s draft. Ramirez went to the Texas Rangers in Round 7 and Harrison was a 9th Round pick for the Toronto Blue Jays.
