The 15th Annual Ron Palmer Summer Basketball & Academic Camp will take place this August 9-12, offering young hoopers a unique all-day camp both in the classroom and on the court. The camp is open to students ages 8-14 and will be hosted at Browning High School in Long Beach.
The camp’s slogan, “It’s not just a basketball camp”, emphasizes the educational aspect offered at the start of every day. Students arrive by 8 a.m. and start off with a math and entrepreneurial workshop in the morning, followed by four hours of on-court skills training to learn the fundamentals of basketball. Snacks and lunch are provided throughout the day, which concludes at 5 p.m.
The registration fee is $125 per student, and there will be a parent orientation session offered on August 6.
The summer camp was founded in 2008 by legendary coach Ron Palmer, who spent a quarter century as the boys’ basketball coach at Long Beach Poly. He won over 600 games with the Jackrabbits, including an impressive eight CIF championships. Palmer was named the National Coach of the Year after leading Poly to a state title in 1984, and the gym at Poly was renamed in his honor back in 2007.
Palmer’s camp has featured a host of well-respected coaches and teachers, many of whom have direct ties to Poly. That list includes names like Glenn McDonald, and current Poly assistant coaches John Atkinson and Erroll Parker, who serves as the camp’s director.
