The562’s coverage of Lakewood Athletics is sponsored by JP Crawford, Class of 2013.
After years of not having its own football stadium on campus ready to host games, Lakewood is back at the newly dedicated John Ford Stadium for the second consecutive week tonight against San Dimas. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Lakewood (0-1) suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Orange Vista last week, but coach Justin Utupo said he’s proud of how his team bounced back in practice and are “mentally locked in” despite the short week.
“We have to start fast and take advantage of every possession,” Utupo said.
San Dimas (1-0) is a strong program from the Valle Vista League that opened its season with a 33-6 win over Fullerton last week. The Saints run an offense much like Compton’s that runs the ball in a variety of ways. Last season, San Dimas rushed for over 3,000 yards and averaged 7.9 yards per carry.
In stark contrast, Lakewood threw the ball 25 times and only rushed it eight times last week.
