PREVIEW: Cabrillo vs. Jefferson, Football

The 1-0 Cabrillo Jaguars will look to surpass last year’s win total in week two, visiting a familiar opponent in the Jefferson High Democrats in Los Angeles. The Jags hosted this matchup last season, falling 50-20 at Jaguar Stadium.

This rematch will be a good litmus test for the Cabrillo defense, which didn’t allow any points in a 54-6 win over Hawkins last week–the Hawks scored their TD on a kickoff return. As Jefferson showed a year ago, they’ve got some explosive playmakers, and they’re also unbeaten coming into Friday’s matchup after shutting out South East, 23-0, in their season opener.

The Democrats ended up a 7-5 team last season, winning the Exposition League before bowing out in the second round of the LA City Section playoffs.

Meanwhile, Cabrillo hasn’t won back-to-back games since 2016, so a road win would be huge for a program looking to maintain its positive momentum. The Jags should take confidence from their blowout win last week, but they also had plenty of things to clean up during practice this week.

The 20 points they scored against Jefferson last year was the second-best offensive output of the season for Cabrillo. If the Jags can be a little smoother in their execution and continue to keep key players healthy, they’ve definitely got a shot to improve to 2-0. Physical running could be the answer for the Cabrillo offense, and the 1-2 punch of Antonio Elam and Bobo Jackson certainly looked capable in week one.
