On a warm Saturday morning on the campus of Long Beach State, some of the top distance runners from around Southern California came together for the first-ever XC SoCal Opener, hosted by Long Beach Poly.
It was a successful meet for the Jackrabbits, with both varsity winners wearing green & gold. Freshman Avery Peck won the girls’ three-mile race with an impressive time of 18:39.36 on and around Jack Rose Track. She won the race by nearly a full minute over Castaic High junior Kassidy Vargas. Wilson’s Natalie Maahs finished third, just ahead of Poly’s Evelyn Hernandez Lujan.
Poly’s Cameron Rhone also won the boys’ race comfortably with a time of 14:38.21. Aaron Cohen of West Torrance finished runner-up, followed closely by Poly’s Luke Larson in third.
The Moore League’s first league meet is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 28 at El Dorado Park.
