Long Beach golfers are back on the local courses to start the 2022 season.
Wilson’s Alyson Sor returns as the Moore League champion and is looking to keep up Wilson’s success.
“She’s a leader for the girls,” Wilson coach Paul Henry said.
The Bruins returns senior Ava Hinkle and juniors Chloe Pearl and Ciara Tancioco. Samantha Shaw is a junior that Henry said is the most improved from last season.
Wilson is also excited to have Charlotte White join the team as the lone freshman.
Millikan will have a young team with four freshmen joining juniors Monique Thomas and Natalia Garcia and sophomores Berkley Heintzelmen, Jayden Munoz and Morgan Nowak.
“We’re still a really young team,” coach Robert Tomlin said. “The good news is they’re all back and they all have a year of experience. We’re young and a couple are a little green, but we’ll be much improved from last year.”
Along with the returners, Millikan is expecting freshmen Hailey Stopskopf and Isabel Lopez to make an impact in their first year on the team.
At Poly everyone is back for the Jackrabbits, who finished second in the league last season.
The Jackrabbits led by the junior group of Madison Williams and Kate Montemayor who finished third and fourth in the Moore League, respectively. The duo also made the CIF individual tournament last season.
Coach Bill Dodge said Montemayor has improved a lot and played in a number of tournaments and won a couple of them.
“We’re just going to keep practicing and get better every day,” coach Bill Dodge said.
Lakewood had a change in head coach this year as Spencer McDaniel takes over after being an assistant coach last season.
“I came in as just the JV coach last year,” McDaniel said. “I’m a retired PGA instructor, and coach Tom Busch said ‘Hey, if you’re having a good time you can take over and I can be your second-hand man.”
The Lancers return Samantha Vong returning along with juniors Jasmine Pam, Prescilla Gomez and Annika Kanaclang.
McDaniel will also have two freshmen with Sydney Adams and Radley Quinn.
At St. Anthony coach Robert Klenk is excited about his team after finishing third in CIF last season.
“This team is stacked,” Klenk said. “We came in first in Del Rey League play and we return everyone and we have an incoming freshman that’s pretty good as well.”
Sophomore Victoria Valenzuela is one of those returners Klenk is excited about. Valenzuela was the Long Beach City Junior Crosby winner.
Along with Valenzuela, seniors Hazel Castro and Stephanie Arenas and junior Julia Klenk are all expected to make the Saints a favorite for winning the league again.
