Long Beach State basketball fans will have plenty of opportunities to see both men’s and women’s teams with a total of 29 home games at Walter Pyramid coming up this season.
The LBSU men will host Biola on Oct. 21 in an exhibition to open the 2022-23 season, and then visit Cal Baptist and UCLA in the following week before coming home to face Montana State and St. Katherine.
The Beach will be part of the Baha Mar Hoops tournament in the Bahamas in November before hosting four consecutive games in December. Big West Conference play starts on Dec. 29 against UC San Diego, and there will be a key stretch of four games at the beginning of Feb. against Fullerton, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.
Senior Day festivities will be Mar. 2 against CSU Bakersfield. The Big West tournament in Henderson, Nev. is scheduled from Mar. 8-11. CLICK HERE for the full schedule
LBSU won the Big West regular season championship last year, and returns key players Joel Murray, Jadon Jones and Aboubacar Traore.
The LBSU women’s team has a difficult schedule waiting for them with two nationally ranked teams from a year ago, three squads that made postseason appearances in the NCAA Tournament and five teams that posted 20-plus win seasons last year.
The Beach opens the season on the road against reigning WCC Champions Gonzaga on Nov. 10, and then hosts La Sierra for the home opener Nov. 12. LBSU will also host Dartmouth, Southern Miss and UC Irvine for the annual Beach Classic tournament at Walter Pyramid.
Big West play begins at the end of December with road games at UC San Diego and UC Riverside. Senior Day will be Mar. 4 against UC Davis. CLICK HERE for the full schedule
LBSU returns six players from a year ago led by redshirt senior Ma’Qhi Berry, senior Lauren Green, and redshirt junior Kianna Hamilton-Fisher.
Men’s Water Polo
LBSU made the most of its time at the Inland Empire Classic last week by making history while picking up a trio of dominant wins.
Senior JJ Loubrial became the four player in school history to score seven goals in one match during the win over La Verne. That is one off the school record, and the 27 goals scored in the win marked the second-most in program history.
The Beach (6-3) is now ranked No. 7 and kicks off a four-game stand on Saturday against UC San Diego.
Women’s Volleyball
LBSU (4-2) was swept at No. 2 Nebraska 16-25, 22-25, 14-25 in their only game last week. Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Glenn finished the match with nine kills, eight digs, and two blocks. Redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon was the squad's second leading scorer with eight kills, while adding five digs, and one block. Victoria O'Sullivan had a solid showing as she finished hitting .308 with six kills.
The Beach hosts Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Women’s Soccer
LBSU (1-3-3) failed to deliver No. 20 Harvard its first defeat last week in a 2-0 loss in its first road game of the season. Goalkeeper Morgan Houston-Shepherd made a season-high nine saves.
The Beach hosts No. 10 Pepperdine tonight and then will start the Big West Conference schedule on Sunday at home against UC Riverside. Both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
Cross Country
LBSU started the season strong at the Anteater Invitational as Allie Scimia and Michael Phillips led the way for the women’s and men’s teams, respectively. Scimia ran a time of 14:00.2 for a third place finish overall in the women's 4K. Phillips finished seventh in the men's 6K with a time of 18:48.2.
