The Moore League clash between Lakewood (1-4, 0-1) and Cabrillo (0-5, 0-1) on Friday night at Cabrillo features a pair of hungry teams desperate for a league win.
After the unfortunate forfeiting to their historic start to the season, Cabrillo is looking to bounce back and get a notch in the win column this season.
“They look like they’re going to be the toughest team that we have played so far,” Cabrillo coach Shane Gonzales said of Lakewood.
Both teams lost in their opening Moore League match ups. Lakewood lost to the potent Poly offense, 42-6, and Cabrillo got lost in the triple option shuffle against Compton, 50-20.
In last year’s match up, Lakewood dominated in a 67-0 performance against the Jaguars. The last time Cabrillo defeated the Lancers was in 2017, in a low-scoring 13-10 affair.
“Cabrillo is a sound football team,” Lakewood coach Justin Utupo said. “They fly around and don’t make a lot of mistakes. It’s a completely different looking team from last year.”
The biggest questions are whether or not the Jaguars find their pre-season high again and reclaim momentum, or can the Lancers’ defense subdue Cabrillo and finally find their rhythm on offense?
Kick off is at 7 p.m. at Cabrillo High School.
