After the St. Anthony football team won their first game two weeks ago, coach Raul Lara said, “I’m happy for them, but you know me, we need a lot of improvement if we want to take St. Anthony to another level.”
The Saints (1-3) will look to make the same improvement they did a season ago when they started the season 0-3 before rattling off five straight wins on their way to a CIF Finals appearance.
St. Anthony will take on Marina (0-4) Friday night at 7 p.m. at St. Pius x St. Matthias in Downey.
Last season, the Saints defeated Marina 43-27. While Marina is still searching for their first win, the Vikings have faced four tough opponents who have a combined 15-4 record this season.
Marina has had three quarterbacks under center this season with Peter Kim and Garrett Hunnicutt combining for 355 passing yards.
St. Anthony will look for some hard running from Elijah Lolesio-Pua who finished with 78 yards against Wilson.
This game is also a meeting of former Long Beach Poly coaches Lara and Marina head coach Jeff Turley.
