St. Anthony (2-5, 0-1) is back on the road for their second Del Rey League game of the season, visiting St. Genevieve (1-6, 0-2) for a 7 p.m. contest played at LA Valley College.
The Valiants have lost three straight coming into the game, including a 23-6 non-league loss to Campbell Hall. That’s a common opponent for St. Anthony, which was a 7-0 loss in the Saints’ non-league finale.
St. Genevieve has mostly played competitive games this year, but is coming off a 51-0 loss to St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy. The Valiants will be playing their first home game in nearly a month, going 1-1 in home games this season with their lone win coming against Burbank (27-21).
The St. Genevieve offense has mostly run through sophomore running back Frank Coreas, who is averaging nearly 5 yards per carry with a pair of TDs this year. Coreas has a pair of 100+ yard rushing games, including a 25-carry, 124-yard performance against Harvard-Westlake two weeks ago. Senior WR William Parra is clearly the top option in the passing game with 39 catches for 430 yards and 4 TDs. The rest of the receiving corps has 37 catches for 404 yards and 3 TDs.
Meanwhile, St. Anthony is in search of its first road win of the season. After exploding for 48 points against Marina on Sept. 23, the Saints have scored just 7 combined points in their two losses since, including a 27-7 setback last Friday at La Salle.
These teams last met in 2019, when St. Genevieve pulled out a 20-14 overtime win.
This is a must-win game for the Saints to keep themselves in the mix in the Del Rey League. They’ll finish with consecutive home games against league rivals Harvard-Westlake and St. Pius X-St. Matthias, but as they’ve been lending their home stadium to St. Anthony, it won’t give either team much of an advantage in the season finale.
