The562 is thrilled to welcome eight talented LBUSD high school students into our second class of interns for this 2022-23 school year. The interns were selected after a competitive application and interview process, which brought in applications from high schools across the city. As part of our partnership with the LBUSD, these are paid internships.
The eight interns will be divided evenly into two groups: one for the current fall semester and the other starting in the spring. The interns will gain hands-on experience and mentorship from experienced and award-winning local journalists, while also receiving payment for their hours worked.
“The opportunity to mentor young journalists in Long Beach represents what The562 is all about,” said co-founders Mike Guardabascio and JJ Fiddler. “We were so impressed by these students during the interview process, and we can’t wait to see what they’re able to accomplish this year and beyond. This group of students wonderfully showcases Long Beach’s talent and diversity, and we’re excited to offer them hands-on journalism experience in their community.”
For the fall semester, The562 will be joined by Dylan Shock, Roxy Kuper-Wilson, Andrew Johnson, and Tirisa Noun.
In the spring, a second group of students will join The562 for their paid internship: Erica Ath, Leilany Castro, Jake Cammarata, and Morgan Lippert.
All eight students possess an interest in sports journalism, with an array of prior experience and interests.
While all internship positions are currently filled for this school year, The562–in concert with the LBUSD’s internship program–is planning to provide additional opportunities on a yearly basis. This year we hired two interns from last year’s inaugural class as our social media directors.
