PREVIEW: CIF Girls’ Volleyball Playoffs, Round One

The562’s coverage of Long Beach Volleyball in the 2022-23 school year is sponsored by Misty May-Treanor and the Dream in Gold Foundation.

Three more girls’ volleyball teams begin their playoff journeys tonight in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs. Two of the three teams will be on the road, with only Wilson getting a home match to start the playoffs. All matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Millikan already won its first-round match on Tuesday, while Lakewood was swept by Mira Costa on Wednesday night in its first match of Division 1 pool play.

Here’s a quick look at Thursday’s matches:

Division 3

The Wilson Bruins (18-10) earned the No. 2 seed out of the Moore League and will host Bonita (22-5) in round one. The Bearcats were second place in the Palomares League. Wilson lost its final two matches of the regular season against Poly and Lakewood, but will have the home crowd behind them as they start fresh in the playoffs.

Poly (11-17) enters the playoffs as the 4-seed from the Moore League. The Jackrabbits will hit the road to face a tough Chino Hills (27-2) team that has only been beaten by Orange Lutheran and Etiwanda, both Division 2 squads. Poly closed its season strong with a win over Wilson, but this is a tough road test against a stout Huskies program.

Division 4

St. Anthony (13-12) made the postseason in year one under head coach Keli Pula. The Saints are the No. 4 seed from the Del Rey League and will travel out past Corona to play at Roosevelt (25-5) in round one. The Mustangs are the No. 3 seed in the D4 bracket and will be a tough out for a young Saints team. If St. Anthony can pull off the upset, they’re guaranteed to host in round two.
