Moore League action is underway in Long Beach and the first round of matches were highlighted by a match-deciding thriller Thursday night as Long Beach Wilson edged Poly 38-33 after senior Dorian Ortloff sent the Bruins into celebration with a pin in the last match.
After two years of COVID restrictions, teams were close to pre-covid numbers and that was clear at Poly as the Bruins and Jackrabbits squared off in a thrilling afternoon of matches that included the frosh/soph, junior varsity and varsity teams.
The Bruins middleweight had a dominant performance after Poly took an early lead.
“Our 60s through 80s is a tough little group,” Wilson coach Seth Wegter said. “We brought in some young guys in the lighter mid weights, but they did well and we did what we could do. So, Poly is a super tough team, and they got some incredible wrestlers.”
Wilson was also in action at the San Clemente Rotary tournament. Jacob Jenner took first place at the 113 division. Jenner was joined by three of his teammates who also placed.
Dorian Ortloff took second at 285, while Eden Jayu Khamnoy (160) and Anthony Vera (170) took third.
The Jackrabbits were back in action this weekend as the girls team was at Mater Dei for the Lady Monarch Tournament and the boys were also in action.
For the girls, Kristina Comia took first place at 116, Raven Ross took second at 189 and Athrizi Guizar took third and Shelby Stump finished seventh.
On the boys side, the jackrabbits had a trio taking third place with Justin Bernal (126), Jose Palormeres (160), and Tyler Gaines (285).
Millikan started league play with a huge victory against Compton 48-12 on Thursday. At the Don of Dons individual tournament, Alex Lovato (152 pounds) and Daniel Knoll (126 pounds) won the tournament over the weekend.
