HIGH SCHOOL
Amir Diaz Espinoza, Long Beach Poly Soccer
Long Beach Poly senior Amir Diaz Espinoza had a week to remember, winning a pair of penalty kick playoff tiebreakers for his team (with three total saves) to help the Jackrabbits advance to this weekend’s CIF-SS championship for the first time since 1999.
Frankie Chambers, Jordan Basketball
Jordan has had a great leader this season in Frankie Chambers, who has stepped up for them in whatever way they needed. Chambers had 29 points, four assists, and three steals in the quarterfinals and 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists in the semis to put Jordan in their first championship this weekend since 2006.
Jennine Osorio, Millikan Water Polo
Millikan made the girls’ water polo CIF-SS championship game for the first time ever last week, thanks in part to the heroics of Jennine Osorio, who put the Rams into the title game with four goals in the semifinals.
Charlotte Echlin, Wilson Water Polo
Wilson came up just short in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship last weekend, but the Bruins had a historic season to reach that game. Goalkeeper Charlotte Echlin had five saves in Wilson’s semifinal win to help get them to the championship.
COLLEGE
Ian Gilligan, Long Beach State Golf
Ian Gilligan finished in a tie for third place at the John Burns Intercollegiate as he fired a 61-71-67 for 199 (-17), a mark that equals the program’s best 54-hole score. His 61 in the first round was a new personal-best for Gilligan, as well as a course record for the Ocean Course at Hokuala.
