Wrestling: Poly’s Athziri Guizar Leads Strong Long Beach Postseason

It’s been a memorable wrestling season for Long Beach wrestlers, but Long Beach Poly’s Athziri Guizar had a season she’ll never forget.

After capping her senior year with another Moore League title, Guizar wasn’t done as she competed at the CIF-SS Individuals tournament.

Guizar won match after match before eventually winning the final to take the 106-pound title.

“It was an emotional day,” Guizar said. “I never thought I’d be in this position when I was a freshman. So, there was a lot of crying.”

Guizar’s historic run wasn’t done there as she went to Masters and placed third. She will wrap up her season when she heads to Virginia to compete at Nationals.

“It’s just amazing to be able to travel and get my name out there,” Guizar said. “Hopefully a college will get interested and I’ll be able to represent Long Beach.”

Along with Guizar, Poly’s Kristine Comia (4th), Shelby Stump (Top 12), Dalila Preciado (5th at CIF, 12th at Masters) and Raven Ross took 5th at CIF and placed 3rd at Masters.

At Wilson, senior Estephany Ibarra placed 5th at CIF and qualified for Masters.

For Millikan, Destiny Moreno followed up her CIF title with a 4th place divisional finish. Aubrey Reynoso took 6th and Hailey Fernandez took 8th.

On the boys side, Millikan had eight athletes place at CIF a solid performance following their overall team title last year.

Gavin Laverde (132) and Alister Castillo (132) each took fourth place at CIF to lead the Rams. Along with Rams senior duo, Julian Lee (8th), Alex Lovato (7th), Pierce Velker (7th), Trey Culwell (5th), Ryan Kaven (5th) and Tannor Costello (7th) all placed.

Laverde was the lone Ram to place at Masters where he placed fourth and went 1-2 at the CIF State tournament.

Wilson’s Eden-Jay Khamnoy and Jacob Jenner took 8th and at Poly Nathan Ichon (4th), Eduardo Sandoval (6th) and Jayden Ekong and Alex Carrera finished in the top 12.
