Welcome back to the562.org’s Athletes of the Week, honoring the best of the best each Monday from around the city.
HIGH SCHOOL
Teilon Tufuga, Lakewood Volleyball
Junior standout Teilon Tufuga has been a standout for the Lancers the last two years, and he was sensational last week on the road in a sweep of defending league champion Wilson. Tufuga had 13 kills, eight blocks, five aces, and 15 digs, accounting for 26 of his team’s 75 points in the match.
Kaiya Yonamine, Lakewood Softball
With ace pitcher Cassie Perryman sick, Lakewood relief pitcher Kaiya Yonamine came in and pitched five scoreless innings against Millikan to earn the Lancers their 64th consecutive league win last Tuesday. Yonamine scattered five hits and struck out five and worked around eight baserunners in the win.
COLLEGE
Reese Berberet, LBCC Baseball
Another Berberet makes Long Beach baseball history as sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet set both the single season and career homerun records at LBCC last week. Berberet had three homeruns in the doubleheader sweep of Compton, giving him 12 on the season.
Naomi Hernandez, Long Beach State Softball
It was another perfect week for the No. 22-ranked LBSU softball team, which won a pair of games to improve to 26-7 on the year. Naomi Hernandez tied a school record with five hits in the opening game of a doubleheader with LMU, tying an 11-year old record set by assistant coach Panita Thanatharn. Hernandez went 5/5 with three runs and three RBI.
