It’s been turbulent times for the Long Beach State Dirtbags, but interim co-head coaches Greg Bergeron and Dan Ricabal announced the signing of two more members of the 2019 recruiting class this week.
Catcher Thomas Greely is currently in his sophomore season at Delta College, and the switch-hitter has a .309 average through 31 games this season with 18 RBIs and a .434 on-base percentage. He led the Mustangs to the 2018 CCCAA State Championship while winning a gold glove.
“Thomas is an outstanding defensive catcher,” Bergeron said. “He has a strong and accurate arm to go along with great blocking and receiving skills. He is a switch hitter that will add balance to our lineup. We are excited to have Thomas on board and look forward to his future in our program.”
Pitcher Jake Rons is a three-year varsity player at Cathedral Catholic in San Diego, and currently has a 1.96 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 39.1 innings this season. As a hitter, Rons is batting .368 during his senior season, collecting seven hits in just 19 at-bats with a handful of RBIs.
“Jake is athletic, and a big time competitor,” Ricabal said. “He has arm speed, and can really spin a breaking ball. Jake has the stuff, and the mentality, to be a quality back-end bullpen arm. Jake is going to be able to help us right away. The Dirtbags are fired up to add Jake Rons to our 2020 pitching staff.”
Greely and Rons join the eight other players who signed National Letters of Intent in November.
