As the postseason begins, a promising track and field season for Long Beach continues to look like it might end in a special place. At last weekend’s CIF Southern Section Track and Field prelims, 46 entries from the Moore League and St. Anthony qualified for this weekend’s CIF-SS finals, which will be held at El Camino College beginning at 11 a.m.
Long Beach Poly had 22 entries qualify for the Finals, and will have a chance to do something special Saturday, with a legitimate shot to win both boys’ and girls’ Division 1 championships. Wilson’s Rachel Glenn continues to be one of the top stars in the state of California, earning the top seed into the FInals in both hurdles races as well as the high jump. Millikan freshman Samarra Monrroy was the top qualifier for the 400, a unique feat for a 9th grader.
Other top seeds included both 4×100 relays and the boys’ 4×400 relay for Poly, and the girls’ 4×400 for Wilson. Poly’s Kenyon Reed was the top qualifier in both sprints, while Queen Okoh was the top qualifier in the 100. Poly’s Everett Steward was the top qualifier in the 400 and Wilson’s Armando Bryson was the top qualifier in the 800. In all, 16 of the 46 Long Beach entries at the Finals will go in as the top-seeded entrant.
Poly led the way with 22 entries, St. Anthony has nine in Division 4, Wilson has seven, Millikan has six, and Lakewood has a pair.
