High School Football Preview: Lakewood vs. Cabrillo

Lakewood and Cabrillo open the Moore League season tonight in a game that could go a long way in deciding who is eligible for the CIF playoffs next month. The Lancers (1-3) and Jaguars (1-3) will likely finish in the middle of the league pack, but right now they’re hopes are high.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cabrillo High.

“We just had our best week of practice so if that carries over we could have a good night,” Lakewood coach Scott Meyer said.

Lakewood has played very tough nonleague opponents this year, and Meyer hopes those hard lessons learned will help the Lancers during league play. Sophomore Travis Perryman leads the defense with 23 total tackles and a pair of caused fumbles.

“Lakewood is young and fast but we feel good and everyone is healthy,” Cabrillo coach Mike Ulufale said. “We need to play hard until the very end.”

The Jaguars opened their season with a win a Bellflower and have lost the last three consecutive games.

Lakewood and Cabrillo have split their last six meetings after the Lancers grabbed a 77-0 victory at home last year. The Jaguars had won the two previous years.
