The Lakewood volleyball team got a wakeup call from Wilson last week—consider the Lancers wide awake. Lakewood clinched a share of the Moore League title on Thursday afternoon with a quick sweep of Long Beach Poly on the Jackrabbits’ Senior Day, winning 25-19, 25-14, 25-12.
Lakewood coach Devon Taylor’s group is one match up on the rest of the league with one match to go, meaning they’ve clinched at least a share of their first Moore League title since 2015. With Jordan left on the schedule next week, the Lancers didn’t celebrate at Poly.
“We’re trying to win it outright, so we’re really focusing on Jordan right now,” said Taylor.
After dropping last week’s five-setter to Wilson, the Lancers fell to No. 4 in the CIF-SS Division 2 rankings. Lakewood looked crisp and sharp against Poly, and Taylor said the Wilson loss had a lot to do with it.
“It was a wakeup call for sure, for the players and the coaches,” he said. “They gave us their best and we didn’t respond. It was a good CIF preparation for us.”
Kyler Tufuga led Lakewood with 12 kills in the win, backed up by Daniel Wright’s 10 kills on 11 swings.
For Poly, Aaron Frost had four kills and two blocks and Xavier Sovanphat had six kills. Setter Andrew Tigas had 16 assists in the loss.

The Bruins swept the Jaguars 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 as they remained just one match behind the Lancers in the league standings. Robby Metscher led Wilson with 10 kills, and Max Bluemel had three aces.
