Bonard Johnson ignited the Lakewood Lancers offense by scoring a game-high 22 points during the 49-42 win over Sunnyside on Saturday as part of the Ron Massey Tip Off Classic.
The Lancers got off to a slow start in the first quarter at Long Beach City College and the Wildcats took advantage on their way to a 13-10 lead. Johnson took over from there scoring 10 points in the second quarter. The Lancers led 29-20 at halftime.
“I just came out and did what I needed to do,” Johnson said about taking over in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Sunnyside started to chip away at Lakewood’s lead but Chris Wallis and Corali’i Mila had an answer each time the Wildcats went on a run. Lakewood took a 37-33 lead into the final quarter and held on to push its win streak to three games.
The Lancers will be back in action when they travel to face Millikan on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
