Wilson Girls’ Water Polo Beats Millikan

STORY BY MATT SIMON

An all-around performance for Wilson girls’ water polo helped the Bruins continue their strong Moore League play with a dominating 18-1 win against Millikan on Wednesday afternoon at Belmont Pool.

Delainey Whelan scored five goals to lead Wilson, but it was a group effort as Ava Smith and Maegan Smith each scored three, respectively, and six other Bruins also netted goals.

“We’re swimming really well,” Wilson coach Barry O’Dea said. “We’ve been doing a little bit of a midseason what we call grind week. It’ll be two and a half weeks of that going into SoCals that will be next weekend.”

With 11 saves from Zoe Seaboch, Wilson cruised to a 15-0 lead heading into the final period to take a commanding hold of the contest.

Seaboch used her strong play in the cage to kick start scoring opportunities with long passes to get the Bruins moving fast in the counter attack.

“When we play like this everyone starts to get the feeling like they can contribute,” O’Dea said. “So, they play really good defense with the idea that if we get in good positioning, we can get a good jump and maybe I can get an opportunity to score.”

Millikan finally found the back of the cage when Jennine Osorio scored to make it 17-1.

“We definitely need to play our game and not let the other teams dictate our offensive scheme,” Millikan coach Jose Guzman said. “We didn’t adjust and so if we don’t adjust, that was our biggest thing in our talk. Overall, playing our own game and I feel like we’re going to be a very hard team to beat.”

Wilson will be back in action visiting Cabrillo next Wednesday, while Millikan will be back to Moore League action on Feb. 5 when the Rams travel to Long Beach Poly.
