Long Beach City College Weekly Update

Long Beach City College beach volleyball started the SoCal Regional playoffs with wins over Bakersfield College and San Diego Mesa College on Tuesday. The Vikings (15-4, 6-0) won the South Coast Conference title last month, and are the top-ranked team in the state.

LBCC defeating Bakersfield 4-1, and San Diego Mesa with a 5-0 sweep. Freshman Elsa Woods and sophomore Mariah Clausen, freshmen Doris Woods and Isabella Alvarez, sophomore Jessica Kaeka and freshman Brooklin Mize, freshman Tatyana Tuilaii-Umi and sophomore Jordan Diaz, freshmen Josannah Vazquez and Sierra Davis all took down their opponents in the sand to punch their ticket to the CCCAA State Championships on Thursday, May 10-12 at West Valley College.

The Vikings will also participate in the SoCal Pairs Regionals on Friday. This is the Vikings’ second-consecutive year in the SoCal Regional Playoffs. In their first season last year, the Vikings concluded their season with a second place finish in the CCCAA State Championships and earned the gold medal in the Individual Championships.

Men’s Volleyball

The top-seeded Vikings were upset by Pierce in the CCCAA Championship semifinals last Thursday 25-12, 25-20, 25-19. Sophomore Steven Rotter had a team-high nine kills for LBCC.

Track & Field

Both men’s and women’s teams took fourth place at the South Coast Conference Finals last weekend at El Camino College. Sophomore distance runner Tylor Wallace led the Vikings with second place in the 800 meter and third in the 1500m.

Softball

LBCC visited Fullerton on Tuesday for a play-in game as part of the SoCal Regional playoffs and lost 4-1. The Vikings fell behind 4-0 in the first two innings, and could only muster one run in the fifth inning. SCC–South Pitcher of the Year Alissa Cienfuegos drove in Alijah Vega with a double, and Lauren Blevins was the only Viking with two hits.

Cienfuegos, freshman utility Raven Agapay and sophomore first baseman Julia Juarez all earned First-Team All-Conference honors. Sophomore left fielder Alijah Vega and freshman second baseman Jennifer Tobar made the second team, and sophomore left fielder Lauren Blevins earned honorable mention honors.

Baseball

The Vikings (21-19, 12-10) finished their regular season with a 9-3 loss to LA Harbor College at home last Friday. They were not selected to participate in the postseason. Center fielder Val Stammler had three hits from the leadoff spot, and freshman pitcher Garrett Rennie (6-2) suffered his second loss with four runs on seven hits.
