All-City Drive Of The Year: Compton Football Win At Lakewood

Compton football has fallen heartbreakingly short in a handful of Moore League games over the last few years. Losing a 13-point second half lead at Jordan and a last-second touchdown pass given up against Millikan are just two examples from this year alone.

Compton and coach Calvin Bryant bucked the trend in late October at Lakewood. The Lancers took a 26-22 lead with 5:43 left in the game, and it looked like the run-heavy Compton offense didn’t have the firepower to respond.

However, Compton answered with a 12-play, 87-yard drive that included multiple third-down conversions. After a string of runs up the middle, junior quarterback Allen Monroe found senior Keilan White over the top on a 35-yard play-action touchdown pass with 39 seconds left to win the game.

“We’ve been watching film all week,” Monroe said. “We saw if we roll out or fake the run, the corners and safeties are going to bite, 100 percent, they’re going to bite. And they did bite and I just saw my boy Keilan running straight and I just threw it. He caught it and we scored.”

Compton went on to make its first CIF-SS playoff appearance since 2008.
