Long Beach sports fans got a little sneak peak of football season on Tuesday afternoon, as St. Anthony hosted a four-team passing league event at Clark Field. In addition to the Saints, the event was attended by Long Beach Poly as well as Ocean View and Corona del Mar.
The Jackrabbits looked pretty good for their second day of practice, and transfer quarterback CJ Montes (who has scholarship offers from San Jose State and Nevada) looks to be the real deal for Poly. He had a full complement of weapons around him with Poly’s track athletes all back with the football team, including Kejuan Markham, who had one of Poly’s two TD catches against the Saints.
“I think we saw a lot of good things for our second day of practice,” said first-year Poly coach Stephen Barbee.
Alex Austin has been having a great spring and summer in terms of recruiting, racking up offers including a Pac-12 one from Oregon State recently; Austin was also named to the USA Football U19 roster. He had an interception for Poly against the Saints.
St. Anthony quarterback Nick Billoups is working his way into the Saints’ offense, and had one touchdown pass against Poly to Donovan Castillo.
“It’s always good to come out and get work against a team like Poly,” said St. Anthony coach Mario Morales. “I thought we held our own, if we could have caught some more balls on offense we might have gotten a little more done.”
