Football: Cabrillo Falls To Hawkins In Return To Field

The Shane Gonzales era at Cabrillo finally got started on Friday night as the Jaguars traveled to Hawkins to open the 2021 season.

With 658 long days since their last Varsity football game, the Jaguars found themselves outmatched against a more experienced, senior laden Hawks team and lost 36-0.

“Today was a long day,” Gonzales said. “The process of making sure we had everything checked off and we weren’t missing anything. You know the results wasn’t what we were expected, but we finished the game and we didn’t have any injuries and the kids fought hard.”

On the opening drive of the game, Cabrillo quarterback Luis Haro scrambled on third down and found a streaking Devin Edwards for a 75-yard touchdown, but it was brought back on a holding penalty. Facing third and long, Haro was picked off to end the drive.

The Jaguars’ defense started strong as they forced a three and out on the next drive after Dylan Nugent-Sugamele deflected a pass.

On his next pass, Haro was picked off and Hawkins took advantage as junior Chad Sabal found the endzone for his first touchdown of the night on an 18-yard run to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

Sabal wasn’t done in the second quarter as his second carry of the night went for a 31-yard touchdown his second of the night. Sabal continued his stellar night as he threw his first passing touchdown to Myles Nash for a 23-yard touchdown as the Hawks took a 22-0 lead.

After another three and out, Nash broke free for a 90-yard touchdown to give Hawkins a 28-0 lead at halftime. Sabal went on to cap his four-touchdown night as he picked off Haro to give Hawkins a 36-0 lead. He finished the night with 81 yards rushing, 47 yard passing and one interception.

For the Jaguars, Te’Jion Jackson rushed for 50 yards on six carries.

Cabrillo returns home to face Jefferson on Friday.
