The Dominguez Dons improved to 4-0 with an impressive 44-0 win over rivals Compton on Thursday night, claiming the 2021 Hub City Championship on their home field. The Dons were in control early, scoring within the first two minutes of the game on their way to a convincing win.
Compton (1-2) has now dropped two straight, and while head coach Calvin Bryant was disappointed to lose the rivalry game, he acknowledged that several key injuries made it difficult to keep things competitive.
“No doubt about it,” said Bryant on whether the injuries significantly hampered his team. “Dominguez was the better team tonight. But we’ve got to get our guys back on the field next week or the week after that, whenever we can get them, and we’ve just got to get ready to play. But I’ve gotta take my hat off to (Dominguez), they’re a great team.”
Senior quarterback Jordan Ford scored five total touchdowns for the Dons (3 passing, 2 rushing) and racked up 216 total yards. He opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown sneak to cap off the first drive of the night, then doubled the Dominguez advantage on their next possession when he connected with Cieonta Davis (3 catches, 88 yards) for a 53-yard TD strike on 3rd & 10.
Ford’s second one-yard TD run made it 21-0 Dominguez, and a safety gave them a 23-0 halftime advantage.
Following a Compton fumble on the opening drive of the second half, Ford hit Damonte Bias for a 17-yard score to push the lead to 30 for the Dons. He would later connect with Takhari Carr for a 26 yard touchdown to close his night. Ford was 10/16 passing for 191 yards and three scores.
Compton was playing without several starting offensive linemen, which hindered its potent running attack. They ran for just 74 yards on 31 carries, led by 32 yards on 17 carries from starting running back Deon Johnson. It was a frustrating day for the potent playmaker, who was never able to break out for big yardage as his longest carry of the day went for seven yards. Kenny Cox ran the ball hard in the second half and totaled 23 yards on five carries.
“When you don't have a lot of depth, everybody's so important,” Bryant explained. “You can't have six or seven guys out and expect to be able to have the same results with some young guys. So we’ve just got to keep working.”
Compton will look to get healthy before opening league play at Wilson next Friday night. Meanwhile Dominguez will look to improve to 5-0 against Centennial next week.
