Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week and thanks to Naples Rib Company for their sponsorship.

HIGH SCHOOL

Ryan Skjonsby, Long Beach Poly Baseball

It was a Ryan Skjonsby kind of night in Poly’s league opener against Jordan. The senior leader pitched four shutout innings, giving up just two hits, and scored three runs with a double and a triple on offense.

Nohea Mapu, Lakewood Baseball

Lakewood’s Nohea Mapu made a statement in the league-opening win over Cabrillo for the Lancers. Mapu went 4/5 with a triple, three runs, and 3 RBIs in the victory.

Leo Pravednikov, Wilson Volleyball

Pravednikov led Wilson to a win over Millikan last week. Once again the league’s best player was Mr. Reliable for the Bruins, with 15 kills.

Laci Berecochea, Lakewood Softball

Lakewood junior Laci Berecochea drove in three runs in an extra-innings win over Wilson last week in the Moore League opener, including her game-winning triple in the 8th inning.

Emily Hanniff, Millikan Softball

Millikan’s Emily Hanniff was the hero for the Rams in a 3-1 thriller against Long Beach Poly last week. Hanniff had a pair of runs and an RBI, scoring or driving ni all of her team’s runs in the victory.

COLLEGE

Jadon Jones, Long Beach State Basketball

The St. Anthony alum and Long Beach native was the hero for Long Beach State last weekend in Henderson, Nevada, hitting a buzzer-beater as time expired to send LBSU into the Big West Tournament Championship game.
