PREVIEW: Wilson Football vs. Huntington Beach

Wilson hits the road for the first time this season with a local showdown at Huntington Beach at 7 tonight.

The Bruins (0-2) have dug themselves early holes in losses to Mayfair and San Dimas, and saw close games get out of hand after halftime because of big plays.

“Key mistakes changed the momentum of both games,” Wilson coach Mark Ziegenhagen said. “That’s high school football. When the momentum changes, you have to catch it. We have to get off to faster starts. Our offense has been a little stagnant.”

Huntington Beach (2-0) has scored 89 total points in wins over Canyon and Western. Junior quarterback Brady Gardner already has 476 yards passing and six touchdowns. The Oilers are ranked No. 9 in CIF-SS Division 6.

“We have to get some ball control and some momentum on our side,” Ziegenhagen said.

Ziegenhagen was an assistant coach at Huntington Beach in 2013 when the Oilers won a CIF Southern Section championship. This is the third consecutive meeting between the two schools, and Huntington Beach has won both games. Last year, Wilson lost at home in overtime 29-28.
